Run flat warning light on? What to do first

Slow down, get off the fast road, stop somewhere safe, then call us. Step by step:

  1. Slow down straight away. Most drivers only find out from the tyre pressure warning light, because a run flat can look and feel almost normal.

  2. On the M6, the M42 or another motorway, leave at the next exit or pull into a service area if you can, as the Highway Code advises. Don't try to change the tyre on the motorway.

  3. Keep within the distance and speed your car's handbook allows (see how far you can drive, below).

  4. Once you've stopped somewhere safe, call or WhatsApp us with your location and reg. If you're in danger, call 999 first. We never work in a live lane.

How far can you drive on a run flat tyre?

As a general guide, about 50 miles at no more than 50 mph after the tyre loses pressure. The RAC calls this a general estimate, and Michelin gives the same range as 80 km. Your car's handbook and the tyre maker set the real limit for your tyres, so check there first. Going further or faster than the limit can damage the tyre beyond repair.

How to tell if your car has run flat tyres

Check the sidewall of the tyre. Run flats carry a marking from the tyre maker:

Bridgestone
RFT, ROF or RSC
Continental
SSR
Dunlop
DSST or ROF
Goodyear
ROF or EMT
Hankook
HRS
Michelin
ZP
Pirelli
RSC
Yokohama
ZPS

Some tyres simply say RUN FLAT or RF. Many cars on run flats have no spare wheel, so an empty spare well is a clue, but the sidewall marking is the proof. Not sure what yours says? Read it out to us when you call.

Can a run flat tyre be repaired?

It depends on the tyre maker and the damage, so the honest answer is sometimes, but often not. The makers themselves disagree. Goodyear says its run flats can be repaired by a qualified tyre professional after a thorough inspection, while Pirelli says punctured run flats should generally be replaced, case by case.

Even where a maker allows repairs, a run flat can't be repaired if it has been driven at low or zero pressure for a long distance, if the damage is in the shoulder or sidewall, or if the inside of the tyre is damaged. Our fitter checks the tyre and follows the maker's guidance before advising you. If it can't be repaired, we fit a new run flat. Here's what each tyre maker allows.

Can you swap run flats for normal tyres?

You can, but think it through first. The RAC says no law stops you mixing run flats with standard tyres, but mixing them on one car is not recommended, so if you switch, switch the whole set. Before you decide, check three things:

  • Spare wheel: a car built for run flats may have no spare, so a puncture on a normal tyre could leave you stuck.
  • Tyre pressure warning: changing tyre type can affect the TPMS. See how TPMS sensors work.
  • Insurance: tell your insurer about the change.

Talk it over with a tyre professional before you switch. We can go through it with you when you call. For the full trade-off, see run flat tyres vs normal tyres.

Run flat tyre questions

Do BMWs come with run flat tyres?

Many do. BMW was the first car maker to fit run flats as standard, on the 1 Series, 3 Series and Z4. Check the sidewall marking on your own car to be sure.

Can you replace a run flat at night or on a bank holiday?

Yes. We fit run flats 24 hours a day, every day, including weekends and bank holidays.

Do I need to know my tyre size?

Not at all. Your reg tells us which run flat your car takes, and the size and marking on the sidewall help us double-check.

What if it's a normal tyre with a puncture?

We deal with those too. A normal tyre is repaired to the British Standard when the damage allows, or replaced if not. See puncture repair.

My wheels have locking nuts and the key is missing. Can you still change the run flat?

Yes. Our fitter takes the locking nuts off with specialist tools on the same callout, then fits the tyre. See locking wheel nut removal.
