Tyre pressure light on? Birmingham Mobile Tyre Fitting checks the tyre wherever the car is: at home, at work or by the road, day or night. If a sensor has failed, we order the right sensor for your car, then fit it and program it on a second visit.

Light came on while you were driving? Do this first

Stay calm, stop when it's safe and check the tyres:

  1. Slow down gently. The light may mean a tyre has lost pressure.

  2. If you're on the M6, the M42 or another motorway, aim for the next exit or a service area, as the Highway Code advises.

  3. Once you've stopped, look at each tyre. If one is flat or clearly soft, don't drive on it.

  4. Get in touch by phone or WhatsApp, giving us your reg and where you've stopped. In danger? Ring 999 before anyone else. Our fitters never work in a live lane.

What your tyre pressure light is telling you

Most of the time, that a tyre is low. How the light behaves tells you more:

Solid light
one or more tyres are below the right pressure, often because of a puncture or a slow leak.
Flashes for about 60 to 90 seconds when you start the car, then stays on
a fault in the system itself, often a sensor.
On, but the tyres look fine
a drop in temperature after a cold night, a slow puncture or valve leak, or a faulty sensor.

Cars don't all behave the same way, so your handbook has the final word on what your light means. If it's on but the tyres look fine, here's how to work out why.

Does your car have tyre pressure sensors?

Not every car does. There are two kinds of tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS):

  • Direct TPMS has a battery-powered sensor in each wheel, built into the valve, which reports that tyre's pressure. This is the kind with sensors that can fail and need replacing.
  • Indirect TPMS has no sensors in the tyres. It works out pressure from the ABS wheel speed sensors, so after putting air in, the fix is a reset, not a new sensor.

Your handbook will say which system your car uses.

Why is the tyre pressure light still on after inflating?

Usually the system hasn't caught up yet, or the pressure wasn't the problem. Work through these:

  1. Recheck all four pressures against the figures in your handbook.
  2. Reset the system the way the handbook shows. Some cars have a button, others a menu on the dashboard screen.
  3. Drive for a short while so the system can update.

Still on after that? Then a tyre may be losing air or a sensor may have failed. That's the time to call us: we check the tyre first and find out which it is.

Will a TPMS fault fail the MOT?

Only if the system itself has a fault. The MOT checks the tyre pressure monitoring system on passenger cars first used on or after 1 January 2012, and a system that is malfunctioning or obviously not working is a major defect, which fails the test.

According to the MOT inspection manual, a light still on because a tyre lost pressure does not automatically mean the system has a malfunction. If the tester can't tell which it is, they add an advisory.

TPMS has been compulsory on new passenger cars registered since 1 November 2014.

How long do TPMS sensors last, and do you need all four?

Most guides put a sensor's battery life at between 5 and 10 years. When it runs out, the sensor stops working and the warning light comes on.

You can replace just one sensor. Sensors fitted at the same time tend to wear out around the same time, though, so replacing all four together is often recommended. Tell us on the call which you'd prefer.

Sensor replaced where your car is, tyre checked first

A pressure warning is often the tyre, not the sensor, so our fitter checks the tyre before anything else.

Whether the car is on your drive, in a car park at work or pulled over somewhere safe, we come to it anywhere in Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield included, and across Solihull.

What does a TPMS sensor replacement cost?

We fix your price before we set off, and it costs nothing to ask. It depends on:

  • The sensor your car needs
  • How many sensors need replacing
  • What time of day or night it is
  • Which part of Birmingham you're in

Your price covers the new sensor, fitting it and programming it to your car.

How it works

  1. Call or WhatsApp with where the car is, your reg and what the light is doing.

  2. We confirm your price and when we'll arrive.

  3. Our fitter checks the tyres and finds what set the light off.

  4. We fix the cause, whether that's a repair or a new tyre, and torque the wheel nuts to your car's setting. If a sensor has failed, we order the right sensor for your car, then fit it and program it on a second visit.

TPMS sensor questions

Do I need new TPMS sensors when I get new tyres?

No. A sensor only needs replacing if it has failed or been damaged, so a working sensor can go back in with the new tyre.

Why did the light come on after a tyre change?

The system may need a reset, or the sensors may need relearning, after tyres are changed or swapped round. Some cars do this on their own; others need a tool. If the light stays on, call us.

Is it worth replacing a faulty sensor?

For most drivers, yes. A working sensor warns you early when a tyre loses air, and on a passenger car first used from 2012, a TPMS that isn't working is a major MOT defect.

My car has run flat tyres. Does the pressure sensor matter more?

It does. A punctured run flat often looks and drives almost as normal, so the warning light is usually the first sign. See run flat tyres.

Can you replace a sensor at night or on a bank holiday?

We come out around the clock, 365 days a year, bank holidays included, to check the tyre and find the fault. If it's the sensor, we order the right sensor for your car, then fit it and program it on a second visit.
